These are the happy faces of thirteen soon-to-be Ferris State University graduates after our portfolio review last Thursday! I left with confidence, positive & constructive feedback, and a huge sense of relief. As we’ve been told, this event is truly rewarding. Thank you to everyone who ventured out to offer us critique!

When you’re starting out in design you hunger to fix all the things. Your imagination and passion are boundless. So what turns a junior designer into a seasoned pro? It’s more than experience—it’s an ability to be in the moment and be a whole person.
A wonderful article on the complexity of the design industry that my classmates and I are about to enter and a reminder that it is always changing as time, and one’s level of experience, evolves. I can’t even begin to imagine that I would intimidate any established designers with my current work or abilities.
Ordering custom Pantone ink and a stamp with my design for my personal branding project was an exciting and rewarding experience, but also very nerve-wracking to put the ink on the pad all by myself!
This process has inspired me to look further into special techniques that I can use in my printed projects in order to add another dimension.

I am especially fond of the section that reads, “If you can’t draw as well as someone, or use the software as well, or if you do not have as much money to buy supplies, or if you do not have access to the tools they have, beat them by being more thoughtful. Thoughtfulness is free and burns on time and empathy.” I like to think that the research, an understanding of users, and concept creation are skills that are just as valuable to employers as my ability to execute.
